My buyers are in Taiwan. Which AI channels can reach them through Shopify?

Someone offers ChatGPT or Gemini reach for a Taiwan-market store. Each AI channel states a United States requirement on its own help page.

When this applies
Your buyers are in Taiwan, and an agency, app, or agent offers to place your store in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or Meta. [1] [2]
When this does not apply
Your store already sells to customers in the United States and you are comparing channels you qualify for, rather than checking whether the store meets a channel requirement at all. [4] [5]
Why this matters
All four AI channels state a requirement to sell to customers in the United States, and Google adds a requirement that the store be based in the United States, so a store serving only Taiwan cannot buy its way past the stated condition. [2] [3] [4] [5]
What to do, or not do
Read each channel requirement line against the markets your store sells to, and write down channel by channel whether the store meets it. If the store does not sell to customers in the United States, keep products published to your online store and keep the store crawlable on the open web, and record that decision with its date. [2] [3] [4] [5] [7] [6]
What you'll see when it's done
You hold one dated record naming, for each of the four channels, whether the store meets the stated requirement, and naming which buyer group reaches which channel. The record also notes that the Shop section states no buyer-location rule and that open-web discovery runs regardless of channel settings. [6] [7] [3]
What this result does not prove
Meeting a channel requirement does not prove a buyer in Taiwan will see your product there. The pages do not state what a buyer outside the United States sees in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Meta, and the Shop section gives no buyer-location rule at all. [2] [4] [5] [6]

When a third party is worth paying for, and what you do not have to buy

When paid help is worth it
Paid help is worth it for Google Merchant Center setup when the store does sell to customers in the United States and wants Google AI Mode and Gemini, or for cross-border shipping and tax setup that makes selling to the United States real. Nothing sold as AI channel access changes the requirement each channel page states. [3] [1]
What you do not have to buy
You do not have to buy an app for this. Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin shows the available channels and their status, every Shopify store already serves /agents.md, and products published to your online store are discoverable on Shop through Shopify Catalog. [6] [7]

An agency or an app offers to get your store into ChatGPT shopping, or in front of Gemini, and your buyers are in Taiwan. Before any money moves, read what each channel states as its requirement. Every one is about the United States.

Shopify’s agentic storefronts overview names four AI channels, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, and states that agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. Active by default describes enrollment. Each channel page still carries its own requirements.

What each channel states

ChannelRequirement on the channel pageWhere the buyer checks out
ChatGPTYour store must sell to customers in the United States, however, your store can be based outside the United States. Products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog, and the Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy must be completed.ChatGPT is a discovery channel. Customers are redirected to buy in your online store checkout, and there is no ChatGPT direct checkout setting.
Google AI Mode and GeminiYour store must be based in the United States and you must sell to customers in the United States. Product discovery is powered by Google Merchant Center. The channel is rolling out to eligible stores.Direct checkout is displayed only to customers based in the United States. Customers based elsewhere can still discover your products, but they are redirected to your online store to complete their purchase.
Microsoft CopilotYour store must sell to customers in the United States.Direct checkout displays only to customers based in the United States.
MetaYou must sell to customers in the United States. Shoppable ads also require the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel with product syncing activated.Direct checkout is displayed only to customers based in the United States.

Two paths that state no United States condition

Shopify’s page on product discovery for agentic storefronts states that your products can still be discovered through web crawling and indexing, that every Shopify store automatically serves /agents.md, and that blocking AI crawlers affects only open-web discoverability. The same page states that Shopify can’t control any other ways in which your products might be listed by AI channels. Your own domain stays open whatever markets you sell to.

The Shop section of the agentic storefronts settings page states that all products you have published to your online store are discoverable on Shop through Shopify Catalog. That page states a publishing condition and gives no buyer-location rule for Shop.

Three situations to record

The store does not sell to customers in the United States

The store does not meet the stated requirement for any of the four listed channels. Do not pay anyone to get the store into ChatGPT shopping or a Google or Copilot checkout: the condition sits on Shopify’s page and a vendor cannot waive it. The paths that remain for a buyer in Taiwan are your own site through open-web discovery, and Shop. Keep robots.txt and product pages open to crawlers, complete the three policies, and write the decision down with its date.

The store sells to the United States as well as Taiwan

The four channels can list your products for buyers in the United States. Google’s page states that a buyer based elsewhere can still discover your products and is redirected to your store’s checkout; the Copilot and Meta pages state only that direct checkout displays to customers based in the United States, and ChatGPT sends every buyer to your store’s checkout. Record which channel each buyer group can reach, since the two groups finish in different places.

The store is based in Taiwan and sells to the United States

ChatGPT, Copilot, and Meta state only a requirement to sell to customers in the United States. Google is the exception. Its direct checkout requirements state that the store must be based in the United States. Record that Google direct checkout is out for this store, and that discovery on Google AI Mode and Gemini depends on Google Merchant Center.

What the requirements do not tell you

These pages state merchant requirements and, for direct checkout, one display rule about customers based in the United States. They never describe what a buyer sitting in Taiwan sees when they ask ChatGPT, Copilot, or Meta for a product, and they name no market outside the United States. Meeting a requirement places the store inside a stated condition. It produces no observation of a buyer’s screen.

The observation you can make yourself lives on your own domain: /agents.md is served, the product page is crawlable, and the checkout accepts the buyer you serve.

Frequently asked questions

Can a store based in Taiwan appear in ChatGPT?
Only if it sells to customers in the United States. The Selling on ChatGPT page states that your store must sell to customers in the United States, however, your store can be based outside the United States. A store that sells only within Taiwan does not meet that line. A Taiwan-based store that also sells to United States customers does. [2]
Does Google AI Mode and Gemini need a store based in the United States?
For direct checkout, yes. The requirements for selling on Google AI Mode and Gemini with direct checkout state that your store must be based in the United States and you must sell to customers in the United States. Product discovery there is powered by Google Merchant Center rather than by a Shopify Catalog access setting, and the channel is rolling out to eligible stores. [3]
If I turn AI channels off, do AI crawlers stop reading my store?
No. Blocking AI crawlers at the /robots.txt or network layer affects only open-web discoverability, and when Shopify Catalog access is deactivated your products can still be discovered through web crawling and indexing. Shopify states that it cannot control any other ways in which your products might be listed by AI channels. [7] [6]
