Do you need a separate ChatGPT feed for Shopify?
A vendor proposes a separate ChatGPT feed or checkout build. First identify whether your store already uses Shopify Catalog's native path.

The question
Do I need a separate ChatGPT product feed for Shopify?
- This applies when
- A vendor or developer says your Shopify store needs a separate OpenAI feed or ChatGPT checkout integration. [Source 1] [Source 2]
- Nothing to do right now
- Do not approve a separate OpenAI feed or checkout build when Shopify Catalog is the store's active ChatGPT route; Shopify already sends eligible product data and keeps checkout on the merchant site. [Source 1] [Source 2]
- Why this matters
- Without naming the store's route, you can pay for a duplicate feed and create a second catalog that Shopify's native ChatGPT path does not require. [Source 1] [Source 2]
- What to do
- Ask the person making the proposal to state whether the store uses Shopify Catalog or a registered OpenAI file-upload integration. For Shopify's native path, decline the extra build and check Sales channels > Agentic. [Source 1] [Source 2]
- How to know you're done
- You can record one route decision: Shopify Catalog with merchant checkout, or a separately owned registered feed integration with a named technical owner. [Source 1] [Source 2]
- What this doesn't prove
- A route and eligibility check does not prove that a product appeared for a query, that every checkout succeeded, or that the route created sales. [Source 2] [Source 3]

You may have arrived after a vendor proposed a ChatGPT feed, a developer asked for a new checkout integration, or someone said Shopify cannot reach ChatGPT without extra software. Before approving that work, ask which documented route the proposal is for.
For Shopify’s native route, merchants do not need to build a separate OpenAI feed or ChatGPT checkout integration. OpenAI says Shopify product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog. Shopify says eligible products can be discovered without additional setup, and the shopper completes checkout with the merchant through an in-app browser or a new tab.
Ask for route evidence before approving work
Ask the vendor or developer who owns the proposed integration for three items in writing:
- The route name: Shopify Catalog or a registered OpenAI file-upload integration.
- The system that will own the product record after launch.
- The exact checkout handoff the shopper will use.
If the answer is Shopify Catalog and the merchant’s online store checkout, the separate feed or checkout build is irrelevant. If the answer is a registered OpenAI integration, the technical owner should provide the integration record and ongoing feed owner before the merchant approves work.
Confirm the store is eligible
Shopify lists three requirements for ChatGPT product discovery:
- The store sells to customers in the United States.
- The store is eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- The store has completed the required store policies.
Eligibility does not guarantee that a product appears for a query. OpenAI describes shopping results as organic and says selection considers the query, context, structured product information, availability, price, quality, and whether a merchant is the primary seller.
Keep the Shopify product record current
Shopify Catalog is the route that supplies product information. The merchant job is to keep the Shopify source record accurate:
- Variant price and availability match what the shopper can buy.
- Images identify the product and its meaningful variants.
- Product descriptions state the material facts needed to choose the item.
- Shipping, return, and other store policies are complete.
Shopify also states that legal disclosures must appear within the first 6,000 characters of the product description for ChatGPT to receive them.
Keep Shopify checkout separate from Instant Checkout
OpenAI announced on March 24, 2026 that its Shopify integration would use Shopify Catalog for discovery and allow merchants to use their own checkout experience. That is the current Shopify path.
OpenAI’s shopping help still describes Instant Checkout for some other eligible products and merchants. The two statements can both be true because they refer to different merchant paths.
For a Shopify merchant using the native route, the observable result is a written route decision, an eligible source record, and a working merchant checkout. There is no ChatGPT direct-checkout toggle to enable in Shopify. Those checks do not prove a product appeared for a query or produced a sale.
