I changed product data in Shopify admin. How long until Shopify Catalog and the AI channels follow?
A price or description you fixed in Shopify admin has not reached the search preview or an AI answer yet. What Shopify states about the wait.
- When this applies
- You edited a product title, description, price, image, or inventory in Shopify admin, or changed a Shopify Catalog Mapping source, and you want to know when Shopify Catalog and the AI channels read the new value. [1] [2]
- When this does not apply
- Your goal is to stop a product from appearing at all rather than to see an edit arrive, or the product was never eligible for Shopify Catalog because it lacks a title, an image, a price above zero, or an identifiable product URL. [7] [1]
- Why this matters
- Shopify publishes no propagation time for an ordinary product edit, so a merchant who reads an old price in an AI answer can be sold a sync or feed refresh tool for a wait Shopify already handles. [1] [2]
- What to do, or not do
- For an ordinary edit, change nothing and run the same query again later in the search preview in Sales channels > Agentic, because Shopify states that Shopify Catalog continuously updates your product data. For a Shopify Catalog Mapping change, expect the delay Shopify states without quantifying. To stop one AI channel from receiving your products, turn that channel's Shopify Catalog access off and allow up to 7 days. [1] [2] [3]
- What you'll see when it's done
- The search preview in Sales channels > Agentic, which displays the raw outputs of Shopify Catalog search, returns your product with the value you edited; or, for an access change, the window of up to 7 days that Shopify states has passed since you turned Shopify Catalog access off. [3]
- What this result does not prove
- The search preview holding your new data does not prove that a given AI channel has displayed it, because each channel controls the final ranking, wording, and shopping experience. The 7-day figure covers your data no longer being shared, not an edit arriving. [3] [4]

When a third party is worth paying for, and what you do not have to buy
You corrected a price, rewrote a description, or restocked a variant in Shopify admin, and an AI answer or the search preview in Sales channels > Agentic still returns the old value. The question underneath is how long to wait, and whether anything you could buy would shorten the wait.
What Shopify states about timing
Shopify’s help documentation carries three timing statements, and only three.
For product data that Shopify Catalog sends to AI channels, the product discovery page states that Shopify Catalog continuously updates your product data, ensuring that there’s accurate inventory and pricing across every AI channel. No page attaches a number of minutes, hours, or days to an ordinary edit of a title, price, image, or inventory count.
For Shopify Catalog Mapping, which decides which field Shopify Catalog reads for your title, description, and category, the page states that changes are processed with a delay. It does not say how long.
For switching access off, Managing agentic storefronts states that if you turn off Shopify Catalog access, it can take up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared through Shopify Catalog.
Three separate clocks. The 7-day figure measures data leaving, so it tells you nothing about how fast a new price arrives.
How to watch a change land without buying anything
The search preview in Sales channels > Agentic runs a query and displays the raw outputs of Shopify Catalog search. Enter the query that should return your product, then read whether the title, price, and availability match what you edited. Shopify describes the preview as a directional signal rather than an exact prediction, because agentic storefronts channels often re-rank results with their own logic.
That observation is free, and repeating it a day later is the whole method. Shopify offers no faster path to buy, so a sync tool or feed refresh service sells the same wait.
Stopping a channel is a different decision
If the goal is to stop appearing rather than to see an edit land, two controls behave differently.
Turning a channel’s Shopify Catalog access off, in Sales channels > Agentic once you deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me, stops that channel from receiving your product data from that point on, with up to 7 days before sharing ends. It leaves your products in Shopify Catalog. The Shopify Catalog page states that they remain available for other uses such as storefront search and Shop, and that you can’t opt out of Shopify Catalog itself. Shopify’s data sharing page adds that AI channels can still reach your product information through web crawling and indexing, where the data might not always be as complete, accurate, or up to date.
Setting the product to Unlisted status, or using the seo.hidden metafield, hides it from every agentic storefront channel including Shop. It also hides the product from sitemaps, search engines such as Google, and your online store search. That is the complete hide, and the price of it is Google.
What the preview does not settle
Seeing your new description in the search preview shows that Shopify Catalog holds it. It does not show that ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or Meta has displayed it. Shopify Catalog supplies product data that an AI channel can use, while each channel controls the final ranking, wording, and shopping experience. Shopify also states that inclusion in Shopify Catalog does not guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer, be ranked in a specific position, or be displayed by every connected channel.
So the honest reading is narrow and useful: the preview tells you whether Shopify Catalog now carries the value you typed. The rest belongs to the channel, and no purchase moves it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I opt out of Shopify Catalog itself?
- No. Shopify's help documentation states that you can stop individual agentic storefronts from having access to your products through Shopify Catalog, and that this does not remove your products from Shopify Catalog. They remain available for other uses such as storefront search and Shop. You can't opt out of Shopify Catalog itself. [4]
- If I turn off ChatGPT's Shopify Catalog access, do my products leave Shop?
- No. Shopify states that removing Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT has no impact on your products being displayed through Shopify Catalog on other platforms such as Shop. Shop is listed as a channel in Sales channels > Agentic, and it has no option to deactivate Shopify Catalog access. [6] [3]
- Does blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt stop Shopify Catalog from sending my product data?
- No. Shopify states that blocking AI crawlers at the /robots.txt or network layer affects only open-web discoverability, and that it doesn't stop your product data from being sent by Shopify Catalog to the agentic storefronts you have activated. [1]
