# Why does my robots.txt not match Shopify's rules, and how do I remove the theme template that replaced it?

> Confirm the old template’s owner, back up the theme, delete the file, and reload robots.txt. Stop for unknown or needed custom rules.

## When this applies

Your theme contains templates/robots.txt.liquid, and the robots.txt your storefront serves does not match what Shopify generates on its own. [1]

## When this does not apply

You maintain custom crawler rules on purpose, or the file is absent from every theme. Shopify says the template "isn't included in any themes by default", so a store without it already serves the generated file. [1]

## Why this matters

The template replaces Shopify’s generated robots.txt. A fixed old override misses later default-rule updates. [1]

## What to do

Read live robots.txt, confirm the template’s owner, back up the theme, delete that file, then reload robots.txt. [2][3]

## When you’re done

Re-fetching /robots.txt returns Shopify's generated output and no longer the template's output. Shopify states that "Changes are instant, but crawlers don't always react immediately." [2]

## What this cannot prove

Deleting the template proves nothing about ranking, traffic, AI visibility, or revenue, and it does not identify which app wrote the file. [2][1]

## Steps

1. Open https://<your-domain>/robots.txt in a browser and read the file your storefront serves. [2]
2. In the theme code editor, look inside templates for robots.txt.liquid. Shopify does not ship this file in any theme, so its presence means something wrote it. Check every theme you might publish. [1][3]
3. Open the file and look for a Liquid comment containing "acr-robots-policy" or "Generated by AI Commerce Ready". That signature identifies the retired AI Commerce Ready managed robots.txt feature. Without a signature you recognise, treat the file as a deliberate customization and stop. [1]
4. Duplicate the theme before you delete anything. Shopify warns "Deleting a theme file might break your theme. Before you delete any file, make sure to make a duplicate of your theme." and "Deleted theme files can't be recovered." [3]
5. Right-click robots.txt.liquid and select Delete permanently from the drop-down menu, then click Delete. Shopify says deleting the custom file returns the store to the default robots.txt file. [3][2]
6. Re-fetch /robots.txt and confirm the generated output is what your storefront now serves. Shopify says changes are instant, and that crawlers do not always react immediately. [2]

- Official page: [Shopify admin theme code editor](https://admin.shopify.com/)
- How to get there: Shopify admin > Online Store > Themes > For the relevant theme, click the ··· menu > Edit code
- Before you act: The theme code editor opens with the theme's directories, including templates.
- When to stop: Stop in three situations. An app that writes this file is still installed: disable that writer first, or the file returns after you delete it. You cannot confirm which app owns the file: copy the template out and keep it instead of deleting it, because Shopify says deleted theme files cannot be recovered. You want custom crawler rules on purpose: deletion is the wrong fix for that, and the file is doing what you asked. [1][3]

## Paid help and free options

- When paid help makes sense: Paid help is worth it when you want custom crawler rules authored correctly, because Shopify says "Edit the code for a theme only if you know HTML and CSS, and have a basic understanding of Liquid." Removing a template that should not be in the theme takes one admin action and is free. [1][3]
- What’s already free: Reading your robots.txt happens in a browser and deleting the template happens in the Shopify theme code editor, so this work needs no paid app. [2][3]

**Remove the old AI Commerce Ready template only after confirming ownership and backing up the theme.** Deleting an unknown customization can remove rules your store still needs.

Shopify generates `robots.txt`; `templates/robots.txt.liquid` replaces that output. The retired managed feature wrote a fixed rule set, so a retained copy does not receive later default updates.

## 1. Read the file and confirm ownership

Open `https://<your-domain>/robots.txt`. In the theme code editor, find `templates/robots.txt.liquid` and look for Liquid comments containing `acr-robots-policy` or `Generated by AI Commerce Ready`.

The filename alone proves no author. Without a recognized signature, copy the text to a file you keep and stop.

## 2. Stop if any condition applies

- An app still writes the file. Disable that writer before deletion, or it may recreate the file.
- You cannot confirm its owner. Keep a copy; deleted theme files cannot be recovered.
- You want custom crawler rules. Keep them and follow Shopify's `robots.default_groups` pattern.

## 3. Back up and delete

Duplicate the theme first. In the code editor, right-click `robots.txt.liquid`, select **Delete permanently**, then **Delete**. No replacement file is needed.

Check every theme you might publish. The file is theme-specific; uploading a theme through Admin does not import it.

## 4. Reload the public file

Finish when `/robots.txt` serves Shopify's generated output instead of the template. Changes are instant, but crawlers may react later. This confirms no ranking, traffic, AI visibility, or revenue change.

## Common questions

### Does Shopify include robots.txt.liquid in a theme by default?

No. Shopify generates robots.txt on its own and says the template "isn't included in any themes by default", so a copy sitting in your theme was added by someone or something. [1]

### Do I need to write a replacement robots.txt after deleting the template?

No. Shopify says "If you want to use the default robots.txt file again, then you can delete your custom robots.txt.liquid file." Deletion is the whole restore path. [2]

### Is the file present on every theme in my store?

Check each one. Shopify says "Uploading a theme from within the Themes section of the Shopify admin won't import robots.txt.liquid", so the file is per theme and a store can carry it on some themes and not others. [2]
