## When this applies

You have one bounded store task that Sidekick cannot or should not perform, and you are ready to choose an official ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity Shopify app. [1]

## When this does not apply

Sidekick can complete the task, you need only general advice, you cannot name the required store data and writes, or the provider's data terms are unacceptable. [1]

## Why this matters

The connection can let a third-party assistant read or change store data, and Shopify leaves review of the assistant's actions to the merchant. [1]

## What to do

Choose ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity for one named job, and take no action when Sidekick already covers that job. [1]

## When you’re done

You either decline an overbroad request, or connect one provider with job-matched access and confirm one reversible result in Shopify Admin. [1]

## What this cannot prove

One correct Admin result confirms that case only. Future prompts, broader changes, and the provider’s data handling need their own review. [1]

## Steps

1. Choose ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity for one named job, and take no action when Sidekick already covers that job. [1]
2. Sign in as the Shopify user with the narrowest existing permissions that still allow the named job. [1]
3. On the Shopify install page, observe the requested data access and decline it if any read or write exceeds the job or the provider's terms are unacceptable. [1]
4. Run one reversible product or collection case and confirm the exact result in Shopify Admin before allowing a broader case. [1]
5. When the result is wrong or access must shrink, uninstall the AI tool from Settings > Apps and observe that it is removed before deciding whether to reconnect. [1]

- How to get there: AI tools available for connecting to Shopify > Choose ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity > Open the official Shopify app > Follow the provider's connection steps > Shopify install page
- Before you act: The Shopify install page names the selected AI tool and shows its requested data access level before you approve installation.
- When to stop: Decline installation when the access or provider terms exceed the job. If a result is wrong or access must shrink, use Settings > Apps > the AI tool > Uninstall, then reconnect only with an acceptable request. [1]

## Paid help and free options

- When paid help makes sense: Paid help is worth it only when the job needs an integration outside the official ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity connections, and someone has to review the store access that build asks for. [1]
- What’s already free: Shopify documents the official assistant connections and the store access each one requests, so connecting an assistant is a store setting rather than a purchase. [1]

**Connect an external assistant only for a job Sidekick cannot finish.** Choose one official Shopify app for ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity, one store, and the access that job needs.

## 1. Choose the job and user

Name a small task, such as checking one product or changing one collection in a way you can undo. Use Shopify's official connection guide rather than a custom connector.

Access is limited by both the app's approved permissions and the connecting Shopify user's permissions. Use the narrowest existing staff role that can complete the job.

## 2. Review the install page

Open the provider's official Shopify app from the connection guide and follow its steps. The Shopify install page must name the intended store and tool and show requested data access. Stop and restart from the official link if they differ.

Decline reads or writes beyond the job. Review the provider's privacy and retention terms; decline unacceptable terms. Keep passwords, API keys, customer exports, and unrelated personal data out of prompts.

More access requires new approval, which you can decline. Approved access cannot be reduced in place; uninstalling and reconnecting is required.

## 3. Verify one change you can undo

Shopify does not review the assistant's actions for you. Before broader use:

1. Ask for the proposed record and fields before any write.
2. Confirm approval is requested as agreed; stop if it is not.
3. Record the original product or collection value and make one reversible change.
4. Read the same record in Shopify Admin and compare it with the approved change.
5. Restore and confirm the original value if this was only a test.

Finish by declining excessive access, or connecting the chosen provider with job-matched access and one confirmed result. That observation proves only this case; AI Commerce Ready and Shopify do not verify the provider's third-party actions.

## 4. Disconnect when needed

For a wrong result or narrower access, open **Settings > Apps > the AI tool > Uninstall**. Confirm it appears under **Uninstalled**. Reconnect only when the new request is acceptable; otherwise leave it disconnected.

## Common questions

### Which AI assistants have official Shopify apps?

Shopify's current help documentation lists official apps for ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. One Shopify store can be connected to an AI tool at a time. [1]

### What controls the data an AI tool can access?

The effective access is limited by both the Shopify app's approved access and the permissions of the Shopify user who connects it. [1]

### Can approved access be reduced later?

Not in place. Shopify says the merchant must uninstall the app and connect it again with the intended access. [1]
